On 30 May 2019, the Herald Sun reported that the release of images of two teens sought by Victoria Police was the subject of delay attributable to the processes of the Children’s Court. This is incorrect.
The Children’s Court is only able to order the release of information once it has received an application from Victoria Police. In this case, the application made by Victoria Police was filed with the Children’s Court at 2.30pm on 29 May 2019. The application was listed for hearing with priority. The Court heard argument and determined the application granting approval later that afternoon. A copy of the order was provided to Victoria Police by the Children’s Court soon after 5pm that day. From that point, Victoria Police were able to publish the media release and images approved by the Court.
